Joyriders – Meet the Cast

Joyriders by Christina Reid is one of the most celebrated plays to come out of Northern Ireland. Apollo Arts will present a brand new production of this important play in the Baby Grand for one week only. Let’s meet the group of young, talented local actors who make up the company of Joyriders.



Amy Esdale

Amy Esdale – Kate
Kate is the Social Worker in charge of the Youth Training Programme that the four teenagers are attending. Middle class, concerned, committed.

Amy Rose Esdale (27) is an actress, singer and songwriter from East Belfast and currently lives and works in London. She has just completed a Masters in Songwriting from the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance, has a BA Hons in Creative and Performing Arts and has experience performing on stage and screen. She currently teaches drama and singing and has devised and directed youth dramatic and musical performances, most recently in the Waterfront Hall Belfast.

James Dougal

James Dougal – Tommy
Tommy is interested in politics & steals for himself and others.

James Dougal,(36) has studied drama since the age of 11. He has been performing in the UK under his rap name Deablo and has appeared in a feature film recently “The Wipers Times” which was shown at the Cannes film festival. James is looking forward to returning to stage for this production he is excited to help bring this much loved local play to life.

Cliodhna Fisher

Cliodhna Fisher  – Maureen
Maureen is hopeful & dreamy. She lives alone with and constantly worried about her 12 year old brother Johnnie, who is a compulsive joyrider & glue-sniffer.

Cliodhna Fisher, (24) is from the Divis area of West Belfast. She is a full time Mum of three and has previously been a member of the Rainbow Factory. Cliodhna also recently appeared in the Apollo Arts Production of Willy Russel’s Our Day Out.

Nathan DonaghyNathan Donaghy – Arthur
Arthur is askinhead by accident rather than choice. He was accidentally shot by the army. His injuries have left him with a shaven head, a scarred face and a limp. He looks dangerous/menacing, but is in general a cheerful joker.

Nathan, (18) is from Poleglass and is a former pupil of St Colms High School. In 2017 Joyriders was the first play that Nathan has done outside of school. Since then Nathan has also appeared in the Apollo Arts production of Willy Russell’s Our Day Out.

Nathan is delighted to be playing Arthur once again and says “Joyriders is a play very close to home and it has many themes that affect our community, so I think its the perfect role for me”.

Carly McCullough – Sandra
Sandra is tough, cynical, intelligent and protects herself by refusing to believe in or aspire to anything.

Carly, (20) is a former pupil of Belfast Royal Academy. She has appeared in numerous productions with Belfast Youth In The Arts including playing Maria in West Side Story, Mrs Gulch in Wizard Of Oz and Rizzo in Grease. Carly has also played Mina in Moulin Rouge at the Cabaret Supperclub in Belfast.

Chloe Gilmore

Chloe Gilmore – Bronagh

Chloe Gilmore (18) has just finished her A-Levels at Ballymena Academy, where she studied English literature, History and Government and Politics. Chloe has been interested in Performing arts for a very long time and has taken part in Apollo Arts performances in the past such as, ‘Our Day Out’, ‘Blood Brothers’, ‘Chatroom’, ‘The Sound of the Musicals’ and ‘The Sound of Movies’.


Nathan Jones

Nathan Jones – Michael

Nathan is a 21 year old performer from West Belfast who has performed in a variety of different roles in notable venues such The Grand Opera House, Theatre at the Mill, The Waterfront Studio etc.

Nathan has been involved with Apollo Arts for many shows including Blood Brothers, Sound of Musicals, Joyriders , Our Day Out, Sound of Movies and Chatroom both as performer and lighting and sound technican.

Recently Nathan has completed his professional diploma in musical theatre as he works towards his dream of becoming a professional actor and director.

Lisa Stewart – Aoife

Lisa Stewart (36) is a mum of two who has loved performing since she was child and her days at Belfast Royal Academy.
She has taken part in Apollo Arts performances such as ‘Our Day Out’, ‘Chatroom’, ‘The Sound of the Musicals’ and The Sound of Movies’

“Apollo Arts had helped me re-awaken my passion for theatre and performing in the last few years. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to study and gain Grade 8″, says Lisa.

Hannah Reilly – Mary-Therese

Hannah Reilly (23) has just graduated from Queens University with a 2:1 Drama and English degree with specialisation in Applied and Physical Theatre. “Having worked predominantly behind the scenes over the past few years this will be a welcomed return to the stage!”, says Hannah.

Grace Cunningham

Grace Cunningham – Michelle

Grace Cunningham (16) is currently studying Drama, English, German and history A Level at Rathmore Grammar School. She has Grade 8 Musical Theatre and Grade 8 Pop Vocals and is currently working on her Grade 8 Musical Theatre Diploma.

Grace has previously been in the Apollo Arts production of Our Day Out. “I am very excited to perform as Michelle in Joyriders and share this amazing story with our audiences”!
