Local School Pupils Hit All the Right Notes with Electro Funk Junk

Northern Ireland’s most iconic theatre, the Grand Opera House has once again partnered with ISL Waste Management and Beat Carnival to deliver an exciting new project, Electro Funk Junk, for Primary 7 pupils incorporating, music, technology and recycling.

The Electro Funk Junk project, funded by Arts and Business, is the only one of its kind in Northern Ireland, supporting a number of areas of the Key Stage 2 curriculum such as Art & Design, Music, and ICT. Overall the project aims to encourage children to see waste not just as something that should be recycled, but as items that can be modified and reused.

Aine Dolan, Creative Learning Manger of the Grand Opera House, comments; “Electro Funk Junk offers an innovative opportunity for children to learn, explore, and use their imagination to create their very own music, created from recycled material.”

During the inspirational project, pupils will assemble pre-shaped items of waste material supplied by ISL Waste Management, to make musical instruments with a difference. Guided by Beat Carnival, pupils will learn hands-on instrument building skills along with sound design and percussion techniques. Guided by sound engineers, the participants will use these objects to create futuristic electronic instruments, which will be fitted with tiny microphones and connected to a computer brain, which will literally turn rubbish into amazing music making devices!

Aine continues; “Working collaboratively with ISL Waste Management, Beat Carnival and schools across Belfast and Lisburn, Electro Funk Junk aims to inspire school pupils to take recycling to a whole new level. Through this fun and innovative project, children will learn not just about the importance of waste management and its impact on our environment, but also about technology and its variety of applications.

“The Electro Funk Junk projectconcludes with participants recording their bespoke music, which they can then use to entertain their fellow students and friends.  Electro Funk Junk will deliver an important message, in a fun and entertaining way, what is why we are particularly proud of Electro Funk Junk.”
