Madama Butterfly (Wednesday)

R

Wed 14 Mar - Wed 14 Mar 2012

Opera

Madama Butterfly, one of Puccini’s most beautiful and expressive operas, is a heart-rending story of the power of love. Sung in Italian with English surtitles, this dramatic tale of east meets west is set in the mysterious world of the Japanese geisha, where 15 year old Cio San marries Pinkerton, a visiting US Navy Lieutenant.

Their love burns brightly for a while, however within a year Pinkerton has gone leaving Madama Butterfly waiting and hoping that he will return.

Lyric Opera revives its imaginative and highly acclaimed production of this haunting masterpiece, starring Korean Soprano Jee Hyun Lim in the title role. Norwegian Tenor Marius Roth Christensen makes his debut with Lyric Opera in the role of the heartless cad BF Pinkerton, with young rising star Irish Mezzo Soprano Sharon Carty playing Suzuki and Welsh Baritone Wyn Pencarreg as Sharpless, the US Consul.

Lyric Opera will be accompanied by the RTE concert Orchestra on what will be Lyric Operas first visit to the Grand Opera House. Don’t miss this opportunity to see one of the most loved operas of all time performed by the best of Irish Opera and Orchestra together in Belfast.

This visit to the Grand Opera House has been made possible by the support of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. Lyric Opera in Partnership with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra.
